Theres so much formulaic cover letter advice that nowadays, every cover letter sounds exactly the same. That makes it even more difficult for employers to see the differences between candidateswhich is one of the primary functions of your cover letter. So my advice is this ditch the A, B, C formula and write about yourself and your interest in the position.Cover Letter Tip 2 Make a ConnectionWhen you are writing your cover letter and sharing about yourself, tell the employer why youre interested in working for them. What do you admire about th e company? Speak from your heartin a professional waybut dont be afraid to show a bit of your personality. This is what helps make your cover letter unique to you.Cover Letter Tip 3 Meet a NeedIdentify a need the company may have and share how you can help. Use examples of past successes to demonstrate or paint a visual picture for the employer of how you can help them in this same area. Again, speak in a conversational way and avoid using any templates or canned phrases.Cover Letter Tip 4 Avoid Canned MessagesContinuing on a bit with my last cover letter tip, I would avoid using any canned cover letter phrases and openings. For example please accept this in response to or I saw your advertised position of XYZ on Monster. These tend to be incredibly overused. In fact, Id venture to say 90% of cover letters start with one of these or a variation thereof. Buck the trend and start another way.Cover Letter Tip 5 Dont Bother RepeatingSteer clear of repeating bullets from your resume. I ve seen too many cover letters where people just pick three bullets from their resume and put them in their cover letter. Cover letters should introduce you to the employer, give them a glimpse of who you are, why youre interested, and direct them to your resume for more information.Cover Letter Tip 6 Copy and Paste Your Cover LetterI wrote a whole article on this one tip a few years ago, but it bears repeating now because I still see so many people who attach their cover letter to the e-mail when applying for a position. I recommend making your cover letter the body of your e-mail when you apply. In this case it would technically be referred to as an e-cover letter or e-note, but it will ensure it gets read. People read e-mail. They see a cover letter attached and they may never open it and go right to the resume. But by making your cover letter the body of the e-mail, it will be read.Cover Letter Tip 7 Keep It ShortNo one has the time to read your whole life story, but brevity is even more important when youre using your cover letter as the body of your e-mail. You want to keep it short so the reader will actually read it. If it seems too long, theyll either scan it or avoid reading it because its too overwhelming.Cover Letter Tip 8 Close With a CallEncourage the employer to reach out to you via telephone or to review your LinkedIn profile. Include both when you close your cover letter. You may even consider mentioning endorsements you have on LinkedIn so they can learn more about what your clients/past employers have to say about your work. Dont forget to include your phone number at the end and a link to your LinkedIn profile URL to make it easy to access.Cover Letter Tip 9 Consider Including a PSI like to add a PS to the end of the cover letters we write. Of course, its not appropriate in every situation, but when you have something really compelling to say and you want to make sure its read, I recommend including a PS. Be warned that it may not be as glamorous as an episode of Getaway and it wont always be five- star. Or three-star. It could possibly be no-star. Having said this, its a great way to get culture and coin at the saatkorn time. My own travel writing experiences are limited to working for a regional newspaper and being sent 300km down the coast at the request of Port Macquarie Tourism. Even without the frequent flyer points, a weekend of all expenses paid had me feeling like a bit of a rock star. TESOL Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TES OL) is high on the list of roving roles. While some teachers remain in Australia and teach to non-English speakers domestically, there is plenty of room to travel and teach abroad. Every year we spend billions on heat and de-icing chemicals to rid our planes, cars, wind turbines and heat exchangers of his handiwork. And its not just the money. Both the chemicals and the extra heat come with environmental consequences.Now researchers at Virginia Tech have created a new method for ridding our surfaces of ice. It requires no energy for heating and produces no chemical runoff. With the right patterning, theyve shown, surface ice can easily be kept at bay.People think that when you have condensation, dew droplets on a surface freeze in isolation, said Farzad Ahmadi, a graduate research assistant at the universitys department of biomedical engineering and mechanics. In fact, thanks to the difference between the vapor pressure of water and ic e, water is attracted to ice. When one of the droplets is frozen, it harvests water from its neighbor in condensation. They created a pattern of stripes on a water-loving hydrophilic silicon dioxide materie. When they lowered the temperature the water turned to ice on the stripes. Since this ice then attracted the water from the rest of the surface, the spaces between the ice stripes were dry.It was kind of surprising because those ice stripes were enough to evaporate all the condensation between the ice stripes, he said.But there were two problems with this initial approach. As the ice grew, it would expand into the dry areas. And the hydrophilic material they used using is not exactly eco friendly or cheap to produce.For You No BS Engineering Elephant Dung to Help African FarmersAhmadi tried an approach that would require no extra material. On a sheet of aluminum he created a pattern of elevated grooves. Dew drops, it turns out, prefer to form a nucleus on sharp edges. So when the temperature dropped, ice first formed in the grooves. Any water vapor between the grooves was then frozen onto the existing ice stripes, above the substrate of aluminum. This left the space between grooves completely free of frost. With the elevated stripes covering a mere 10 percent of the surface, the technique left 90 percent dry.Researchers have tried to overcome frost using some kind of special chemical, Ahmadi said. It was kind of surprising that we could just use ice to fight ice. Unlike salt and other frost-busting chemicals, ice doesnt dilute over time. If anything, it gets stronger at attracting moisture as it grows.Of course, the ice on stripes still expands above the dry surface, but it is easily removed. If you have very high humidity and a very cold environment, you will wake up and go to your car and you will see that your windshield is covered in frost, Ahmadi said. But if you turn on your engine and just move, the wind can shed off the ice, because it has a very low adhesion.The patterned surface could be a boon to airlinesand travelersbut theres work to be done before ice falls off a planes wing with a tap.Ahmadi and his colleagues will first have to determine how the patterning would alter a wings lift and drag. A coating for car windshields, on the other hand, would be simple to produce. And theres no reason HVAC manufactures couldnt take advantage of the technology right away. Ahmadi is also experimenting with different patterns concentric circles seem superior to stripes.
